How to compare two PDF documents for differences
- Open the newer version in PDFBirdie.
- Choose Tools > Compare With.
- Pick the older version.
- Read through the changes. Removed words are red and added words are green.A list shows every change so you can jump straight to it. PDFBirdie compares page 1 with page 1, page 2 with page 2, and so on. Extra pages at the end of either version show as added or removed.
Compare drawings and plans with Overlay
When the lines in a drawing move, switch the view to Overlay. It lays the two versions on top of each other:
- Red shows lines that are only in the old version.
- Blue shows lines that are only in the new version.
Turn Removed or Added on and off to look at one side at a time. This works well for floor plans, site plans, shop drawings and marked-up sets.
Comparing contract drafts
Contracts often come back with changes that nobody pointed out. Compare the draft you sent with the one you got back before you sign:
- Catch a changed date, amount or party name.
- Spot a sentence that quietly went missing.
- See exactly which edits the other side made, even when they didn't track changes.
If both versions are scans, run Tools > Recognize Text on each one first so PDFBirdie can read the words. Or use Overlay to compare the pages as pictures.

Can PDFBirdie compare two PDFs for free?
Yes. Comparing is included, like every other feature.
Do both files need to be the same length?
No. Extra pages at the end of either version show up as added or removed. If a page was added or taken out in the middle, the pages after it shift, so the changes show up on those pages too. For the clearest results, compare versions with the same page layout, or compare a section at a time.
Does it compare scanned PDFs?
Yes. Recognize the text first to compare words, or use Overlay to compare the pages as images.
Are my files uploaded?
